Did you ever want to test your skill at being a balloon handler for one of those large inflatable creatures in a parade? Well Kitty did! An exciting account of how the Thanksgiving Day balloons are "handled" was the presentation of the evening. Katherine D. Bowers, aka "Kitty" presented the details of her adventures in balloon handling since 2003. Kitty was born in New York but is a New Jersey resident by choice. Kitty’s charitable work includes the Heart Fund, March of Dimes and the American Diabetes Association. She is an active member not only in her own local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter, but presently holds the office of DAR State Historian for the second time. Kitty travels extensively and in her spare time conducts house and estate sales. Mix a love of history and life, add a dash of adventure, a sparkling wit, and you have Kitty. The general membership business meeting began at 7:30 pm with Kitty’s presentation following at 8 pm. |

The History of Ringling Manor and the
American Circus "The Greatest Show on Earth...Ringling Brother, Barnum and Bailey Circus" This is a phrase that has special meaning to Jefferson Township. Alfred T. Ringling of the famous Ringling brothers lived in a stone and cement mansion in the township from 1916-1919. Ringling wintered the circus on his large estate nestled between Greenpond and the Bowling Green Mountains. Leaving the Oak Ridge train station, a parade of circus animals including elephants, leopards and lions were marched down Longwood Road ( Oak Ridge/ Berkshire Valley Road) to the delight of local residents. Ringling lived and auditioned circus acts in his mansion. He also gave lavish parties and hosted famous stars of the era such as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Now known as Ringling Manor the estate is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the Morris County Heritage Commission. The program will be a power point presentation featuring the history of the circus with photographs rarely seen and historical society's photographs of the construction of the Ringling mansion along with commentary. There will also be displays of costumes worn by Ringling guests and the society's collection of the original pictures of Ringling's beloved cats along with other artifacts from the Manor. The Jefferson Township Historical Society invites guests of all ages to join them Thursday, May 7,2009, Camp Jefferson's main lodge, Weldon Road beginning at 7:30 P.M. (access off Route 15). Refreshments with a circus flare and other surprises are planned. For additional information contact Christine Williams, 973-697-8675. |
